Everything you need to know about verified plastic recovery
Verified Plastic Recovery is the ethical collection, removal, and recovery of plastic waste from the natural environment using a method that tracks and verifies the entire process. VPR focuses on low-value plastics that would otherwise become pollution—materials where the cost of collecting and processing is higher than their market value. This includes hard-to-recycle plastics like multi-layered packaging and flexible films that often end up illegally dumped, burned, or polluting ecosystems.
Once collected, plastic is sorted at vetted facilities and processed according to a strict hierarchy prioritizing the most sustainable outcomes. Recyclable plastics are baled and sent to appropriate recycling partners to become new products. Where mechanical recycling isn't feasible, materials may be upcycled into products like plastic lumber for community infrastructure. For the most difficult materials, co-processing is used as a last resort—avoiding landfilling and open burning while achieving significantly lower environmental impact.
In each location where we operate, rePurpose Global conducts rigorous baseline studies to establish existing plastic recovery and recycling rates for different plastic types. We only intervene where recovery rates are low (below 20%) and plastic is being illegally dumped, burned, or polluting the environment. We then set up projects to fix the value chain and recover plastic above the baseline, business-as-usual scenario.
Plastic waste doesn't respect borders. The U.S. is the world's largest plastic polluter with per capita use 6-10 times higher than countries like India. Many packaging types aren't recyclable through U.S. curbside programs and are often exported to countries lacking proper infrastructure. We focus on pollution hot spots where interventions create the greatest environmental benefit—in fact, 90% of ocean plastic pollution originates from just 10 rivers, 8 of which are in Asia.
rePurpose Global pioneered the world's first Verified Plastic Recovery Protocol, ensuring every pound meets strict criteria for additionality, traceability, and net positive impact. All activity is logged in reTrace, our proprietary platform that captures photo, time, and GPS data at each step. We conduct biannual internal audits, annual third-party audits, and maintain full visibility from recovery through processing to guarantee verifiable impact without unintended consequences like waste displacement.
All rePurpose Global projects operate under strict standards outlined in our Impact Code of Conduct, including commitments to fair wages, safe working conditions, and inclusive employment practices. Workers receive uniforms and PPE, with many projects being women-led and focused on economic empowerment. We enforce these standards through biannual internal audits, annual third-party audits, and worker well-being surveys, with all activity logged in our proprietary reTrace platform.
Consumer trust in the rePurpose badge is exceptionally strong. In a January 2025 nationwide study:
The logo now appears on over XXX products sold annually across 300+ brand partners, with strong recognition leading to tangible business results—including partners gaining distribution at major retailers like Whole Foods and Sprouts.
You can use the rePurpose logo and approved claims across packaging, websites, emails, social media, retail signage, and marketing materials. Absolutely. We have alternate, compact logo versions and best practices specifically designed for small-format packaging like travel-size beauty products or sachets. We've successfully worked with brands to incorporate the logo in unique places including package bottoms, inserts, neck caps, and other creative placements while maintaining brand integrity and compliance requirements.
